ProFractional® Laser

ProFractional® uses Sciton's erbium laser to create thousands of microscopic treatment zones in the skin. Each zone is surrounded by untouched skin, which supports the skin's natural renewal as new collagen forms. Settings are customized for every patient, based on your skin and the downtime you can plan for.

Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least 2 weeks. Stop retinoids, glycolic or salicylic acids and other active skincare ingredients about a week before treatment. If you are prone to cold sores and are having the area around the mouth treated, let your provider know at your consultation.

We'll first clean your skin of any makeup and moisturizers. For male patients, you'll need to shave so we can treat your lower face. Numbing cream will then be applied.

DO

• Cleanse twice a day with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, starting the morning after treatment. Use your hands and gentle patting motions.
• Mist or use cool compresses to soothe the treated area if needed.
• Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily once your skin can comfortably tolerate sunscreen.
• Follow the aftercare plan from your provider.

AVOID

• Direct sun exposure for at least 4 weeks, and tanning beds at all times.
• Picking, scrubbing or exfoliating the treated area while it is flaking.
• Active skincare ingredients (retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums) until your provider says it is safe to resume.
• Strenuous exercise, hot tubs, saunas or steam rooms for at least 48-72 hours, or until redness has settled.
• Makeup until flaking has mostly settled, usually 3-5 days.

EXPECT

• Redness and mild swelling for 1-3 days. Recovery varies from person to person.
• A sunburn-like sensation for the first 12-24 hours.
• Peeling or flaking starting around day 2-3; this is a normal part of the skin's renewal.
• Gradual improvement in skin tone, texture and clarity as collagen remodels over the following weeks and months.
• Contact the clinic with any concerns, such as blistering or excessive redness or swelling.

How many treatments are needed?

Many patients see improvement after one treatment, and a series may be recommended depending on your concern. Your provider will build your plan at your consultation. A consultation is required before treatment, or a Pre-Treatment Consultation & Skin Preparation Appointment if you are an existing patient.

Is it painful?

Numbing cream is applied before treatment. Most patients describe moderate discomfort during the treatment and a mild sunburn sensation afterward.

What kind of results can I expect?

Improvement in the appearance of skin texture, fine lines, scarring and pigmentation, for a clearer, more refined-looking complexion. Results build over time as new collagen forms, and results vary.

HALO vs ProFractional, which one?

Both are Sciton lasers that renew the skin in different ways. HALO is often chosen for tone, pigmentation and pore size. ProFractional® is often chosen for texture, fine lines and scarring, and usually involves a few extra days of recovery. Your provider will recommend the right one for your skin at your consultation.

Can I return to normal activities after the treatment?

Yes. For the first 48 hours, protect your skin as instructed; after that you can return to your normal activities. Your skin will begin to flake after 48 hours, which can take 5-7 days, and you can wear makeup once flaking has mostly settled.
